Indie Style Market's New Broad Ave. Home (Closed)
One of my favorite things to come out of Memphis in the past few years is the MemShop initiative that the Mayor's Innovation Delivery Team launched. It's such a cool concept: help entrepreneurs bring local retail to empty spaces by helping the shop owners out with rent for the first six months.
It's working, too. The Indie Style Market, a collective of Memphis craftspeople, has found a permanent home on Broad Ave., just down the street from the thriving Five in One Social Club.
The market features incredible art, crafts, apparel and jewelry, all handmade by Memphians.
The market was super packed when I stopped by during the Broad Ave. Night Market, but I noticed steampunk-inspired jewelry, handmade soaps, super cute hats, illustrated notebooks, knitwear and adorable felted mobiles. I almost bought this to hang in my office:
If you go into the room next door to the Indie Style Market, you'll find Paulette's Closet, a vintage clothing market stuffed with dresses, sweaters and accessories from the 1950's through the 1980s.
The Indie Style Market's temporary lease runs through the end of 2013, but they're hoping to stay open beyond that. Here's a complete list of their vendors, but know that they're always looking for more.
The market is open Wednesday and Thursdays from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. They open by appointment only on Mondays and Tuesdays.
