The Orpheum's annual Summer Movie series is one of my favorite annual events. The theatre, which is primarily used for Broadway shows returns to its movie house roots on weekends in June, July and August. The air conditioner is cranked up, there are all kinds of pre-show shenanigans (like costume contests, dance offs, etc.), and people get very, very into whatever is playing.
Historically, the series has featured older classic movies, but in the past few years, the Orpheum has started introducing some newer favorites. This year's line-up is easily one of their best ever.
The Cameraman (June 7)
Gone with the Wind (June 14)
Philadelphia Story (June 20) – My favorite!
Casablanca (June 21)
Pillow Talk (June 27)
The Parent Trap (June 28)
The Searchers (June 28)
Breakfast at Tiffany's (July 11)
Sing-a-long Sound of Music (July 12) – You read that right. You get to sing along to the Sound of Music. My mom went the last time they did it and swears it's amazing.
Sing-a-long Grease (July 18)
Rocky Horror Picture Show (July 19)
Dirty Dancing (July 25)
Double Feature: Ghostbusters and Poltergeist (July 26)
Pretty Woman (August 1)
Anastasia (August 2)
Big Lebowski (August 2)
Mean Girls (August 8) – Seriously? Can. Not. Wait.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (August 9)
As far as I'm concerned, the only thing that could have made this year's series any better would have been the addition of "Spinal Tap".
Admission to all of the movies is $7 for adults and $5 for kids, and seating is general admission.
