5 Things to Do in Memphis This Weekend: 12/7 - 12/9

Every so often, there comes a weekend with so much going on that only picking five things to do is really difficult. This is one of those weekends:

1. Snowy Nights in My Big Backyard, Memphis Botanic Garden, Fridays and Saturday, 6:30 p.m., $5 MBG Members / $7 Non-Members

Don't let geography - or this weird spell of 70 degree weather - get in the way of having a white Christmas. The Memphis Botanic Garden is having a month-long snow day in My Big Backyard with a giant snowglobe (that you can crawl inside), holiday crafts and games, a massive light bright and a musical light show.

2. Jersey Boys, Orpheum Theatre, Friday - Dec. 16, various times per performance, $29 - $119

"Jersey Boys", a musical about 1960s pop group The Four Seasons, is loud, fast, funny, profane and at the Orpheum this weekend. The touring cast is fantastic (one of the guys is a dead ringer for John Hamm), the sets and lighting are perfect, and the music is incredible. If you don't have tender ears, this one's for you.

3. Ugly Sweater Run, Shelby Farms Park, Saturday, 11 a.m., $30 per person

Ugly Sweater Run, Memphis, Tenn.

Don your favorite festive holiday knit (the uglier the better) and run in the Ugly Sweater Run when it stops in Memphis on Dec. 8. If you're not a serious runner, don't worry – the Ugly Sweater Run is consistently referred to as a "jog" on the official website, and the organizers also make lots of references to mustache contests, spiked hot chocolate and stops along the route where you can go sledding.

4. Memphis Roller Derby Presents: Ho Ho Ho Burlesque Show, Hi-Tone Cafe, Dec. 8. 10 p.m., $10

Derby Burlesque Show

Celebrate the holidays with the lovely ladies of Memphis Roller Derby (myself included) at the sixth annual Ho Ho Ho Burlesque Show. Expect lots of traditional and holiday themed burlesque performances from the derby girls and a few special guest performers, live music from Jimmy Tightpants and more holiday cheer than you can handle. Proceeds from the door benefit the league.

5. Memphis CashMob: Creative Women's Collective, Literacy Mid-South, Sunday, 2 p.m. - 4 p.m., free(ish)

A cash mob is like a flash mob with a purpose - to provide a quick influx of cash to a local or independent business. This weeken's cash mob is for the Creative Women's Collective, a group of women who produce art, jewelry and more but don't have storefronts. The rules are simple: plan to spend about $20, make three new friends, and be kind and patient.

If none of these events are your thing, or you just want to see how much stuff is really going on this weekend, there are a ton more events are listed on the blog's calendar. Go out, have fun!
