Wednesday News Update: Quote of the Day, Rent-Free Retail and Electronics Recycling

If you're looking for some vintage Memphis items (like patches, coffee cups from businesses that have closed and trophies from sports teams long forgotten), you can find them at the teal-colored antique mall on Summer Ave.

And now, the news:

- This is line from Geoff Calkins' most recent column is a contender for quote of the day (or possibly quote of the month):

"I love living in Memphis. Not because it's perfect, but maybe because it's not. There is work to be done here. There will always be work to be done here. And there are thousands and thousands of you out there doing it."

- If you've got a great retail concept but don't want to commit to the cost of opening a full-time store, you should apply for the South Main Pop Up Shop project. The winning concepts will get the keys to the Power House Gallery for three months of rent-free retail.

- The forecast for today is scattered showers -  in your eyeballs. They'll start after you read this story about a Memphis veteran being honored for his D-Day service.

- Start rounding up your unloved electronics - the Downtown Memphis Commission is having an electronics recycling drive at the Commercial Appeal's offices (495 Union Ave.) from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on April 20th. Don't worry about being that guy with the crazy ammount of junk - there's no limit to the number of items you can bring.

- I'm bringing the I Love Memphis sign out of hiding. If you'd like your picture taken with it, let me know. Or, make your own and send me a picture.
