Grab Some of Hunny's Buns
Chef Marisa Baggett wants you to grab her buns. I know because it says so on the bags that she uses to deliver her special orders of Asian-inspired stuffed rolls.
Marisa launched Hunny's Buns, her new bun pick-up and delivery service, in January after cooking them for friends turned into enough orders to merit a business. Now, she cooks and delivers several hundred buns every week.
She offers five kinds of bun at the moment - curry vegetable, Asian barbecue pork, orange duck, chicken kimchee and mustard pretzel with beef frank (or soy dog) - but she's planning to expand her menu soon.
I ordered some of the curry vegetable and mustard pretzel buns to try. I placed my order via email, and a few days later, I came home to a little bag of buns.
Marisa recommends that you heat them up a little before you eat them, so I popped mine in the oven at 250 for about 5 minutes. The curry vegetable bun (the lighter one) was a soft roll stuffed with mild curried potatoes, sort of like you'd get at an Indian Restaurant.
I ordered my mustard pretzel bun with a beef frank, which was doubled up and covered with tangy, salty dough. If you can imagine a combination of a really good hotdog with pigs-in-a-blanket, that's about what this one tastes like.
Though I ate my buns sitting at my desk, they're the kind of food that's perfect for a walking lunch. Marisa has plans to sell them at area farmers markets this spring, but I think they'd be an excellent food truck option.
Marisa's buns cost $12 per half dozen and $22 per dozen. Order them here.
