Reasons to Love Memphis #42: Cheap Parking

Reasons to Love Memphis #42: Cheap Parking

Parking can, indeed, be fun.

Parking in downtown Memphis isn't just cheap - it's the cheapest in any major city in North America.

Despite all of downtown's growth over the past few years, it's still easy to find convenient, inexpensive parking. In most garages, you can park hourly for $1-2. Special event parking (with the exception of Memphis in May) tends to run no more than $10.

There's also a ton of free parking on the edges of the downtown core and in South Main. Free spaces are generally easy to find, except on the busiest weekend nights. All metered spaces are free after 6 p.m., and there's a ton of side street parking.

Outside of downtown, pretty much all parking Memphis is free and non-metered. Win!

Just be aware that while it might be cheap, the Parking Can Be Fun garage closes nightly at 11 pm. and if you dont have a monthly pass - you are not getting in to get your car out. Found this out the hard way....

@Amber | Yes, I heard A.C. (the mayor) say that on the radio the other day.

Because Memphis is very slow to update or repair infrastructure, there are many parking meters that are either franctured and non functioning or missing completely.  Free parking 24 hours a day in these spots.  Bonus.

Very very bad. We were charged $5 in, and they said we hadn’t paid and made us pay $5 again. We were first timers here and will never go back.

Unfortunately, I was unable to acquire a hotel in downtown Memphis . I will have to take my car out to the Hilton 25 minutes away. I would like to put my car somewhere safe when I drive in on Saturday morning for the race? Any suggestions close to the Marathon would be great! I am running the 13K at 8 a.m. My friends runs the 10k at 7 a.m.  Any suggestions would be helpful!
