Found: Ugly Mug Coffee
It really is the perfect day to check Ugly Mug Coffee off of the scavenger hunt list. It's completely gray outside, a little bit rainy, and definitely colder than it was yesterday.
I picked up a bag of Ugly Mug's First Cup whole bean coffee at the Midtown Schnucks a few days ago. The label on the front says it's "even bodied" with "berry overtones". It also apparently makes a good first impression (which is just what I look for in my coffee).
The really interesting part of the bag is the back. Here's what it says:
"This coffee: hails from Memphis. The Seattle of Southwestern Tennesseee. Is purchased, roasted and packaged with a little something we like to call integrity. Reminds us of a time before the double mint mocha decaf skim latte ruled the earth. Knows good looks will only get you so far. Speaks without resorting to faux European words. Except faux. Understands you. Maybe too well. Works best with one or two tablespoons of ground coffee per 6 ounces of water. Is the latest bundle of joy from Ugly Mug Coffee."
The first cup is nice and simple. Those berry undertones aren't so strong as to make the coffee actually taste like berries, which is nice. I added a little milk to mine, but even without, it's smooth and drinkable.
I've had Ugly Mug's Southern Pecan coffee before and loved it. Unfortunately for me, it's only sold ground, and I don't have a drip coffee maker anymore. I highly recommend it, though - yes, it's flavored, but it's more of a suggestion of southern pecans, not a blow to the head with a southern pecan-flavored frying pan.
Ugly Mug makes their fair trade coffee on Old Getwell Rd. in Memphis and they sell their coffee (as well as hot chocolate and tea) online, at Memphis grocery stores, and in restaurants and coffee shops across the U.S.
